Sugar Paid

The Mets completed a productive week last night, inking our boy D. Wright to a 6 year, $55 million contract, thus ensuring that he and Flamenco will be side by side on the left side of the infield from now until well after GEICO Field opens in 2009. Well done. There was also a rumor floating around that Sugar Pants insisted on including a clause in his new contract whereby loyal Mets bloggers who've helped spread his word to the masses are entitled to 1% of his yearly income throughout the life of the contract. Cha-ching!

Lots of quick hits today:

(1) Nice to finally have a laugher last night after a bunch of tight games in a row. I like my Sunday nights restful and tension-free.

(2) How's that Benson-for-Julio/Maine swap looking now? Maine just gets better and better, and Julio has turned into El Duque, who's starting to look like the leading candidate for that #3 spot in the rotation. Meanwhile, Anna's hubby is on the DL at an underwhelming 9-9, with a 4.71 ERA. Things could obviously change, but for now, go Omar!

(3) Flashing back to Friday night's game, I was struck with a brilliant idea. SNY really needs to have a "Pedro Cam" in the corner of the screen for every game where Pedro's not pitching. The guy was nuts on Friday, especially after Duque's hilarious triple. Just one camera trained on Pedro and his wiffle bat in the dugout the whole game. You're telling me you wouldn't watch that?

(4) Tommy and I showed up at Shea on Saturday for a doozy. After Lieber botched the toss to first, I said to Tom, "He will regret that. Mark my words." Consider my words marked.

(5) I guess now we know why Paulie Lo initiated a media boycott. Yawn.

Finally, if by some chance you missed my post on Saturday about Michael Kay's radio antics, please check it out. Unless you're easily offended, in which case I INSIST you check it out and then write your Congressman.

Wait a second, lemme see if I got this straight. Paul LoDuca, a short, stumpy dude from Brooklyn wakes up in his mid-30's, finds that he's on TV 150 times a year, earns millions & millions of dollars, and realizes that he can bone dozens of flaming hot chicks as a result.

Ok.

And, lemme see if I also get this part: the dorky guys who not only couldn't get laid in high school, but also failed to letter in baseball (uhhh, that would be a description of . . . me, in high school), are now doing the hand-wringing, media tough guy routine upon discovering this fact.

Ohhhhh, the horror of sports-writing.

And that's before I even follow your Michael Kaye link. I think I'm gonna spare myself.

Did anybody read/see anything about why Maine was pulled after 90 pitches and 6 innings. I know he pitched into some trouble in the 6th, but he did strike out the last two batters he faced. I didn't see anything about it in the Post. Did the Daily Worker mention anything about it?

I listened to the Kay clip last night, though I couldn't get all the way through it. He was ranting and raving like a lunatic, crazier than Russo at his loudest, and (obviously) way of topic. I don't really know what to say about it other than Kaye obviously has a lot going on in his head that we don't know about, and in the future, I prefer that it stays that way.

Maine was actually pulled after 107 pitches, not 90. I guess the George Bush Post has it wrong.

Yeah, I saw 107 pitches too. We're so conditioned to believe that's a high pitch count, but he still could have gone another inning.

Up 7 runs in the 7th inning, with a double digit lead, I would have liked to see Willie leave Royce Ring in for a full goddamn inning rather than one batter. I suppose he might be a left handed specialist, but it would be nice to see if he can get more than one major league batter out at a time per appearance.

You can't help but be impressed with Maine.

Count, that occurred to me as well - kind of strange playing the righty/righty matchup mid-inning with such a big lead. Maybe Bradford needed the work.

I think Willie played a little loose with the pen because of the Monday off day. Still, I agree with the Count that it was a perfect time to see what Ring is bringing to the majors in '06.

I didn't get the 90 pitches from the Post, but from the game tracker on CBS Spostsline (which, as far as I know, has no political affiliations). I guess I may have read it wrong.

I was there and was calling for Maine in the 7th. But with an 8 run lead, why?

It didn't make sense. If it was a closer game, send him back out. He looked great. Yesterday, it wasn't necessary.

He has looked fucking swell lately and legit as fuck. Really nice to see him step it up so much after a failed deadline in terms of upgrading the rotation.

And yes, it was a good time to see Ring. Why did Willie pull him and not let him see what he can do against righties more?

Willie is fucking ponderous sometimes. Garbage time for Ring to get his feet wet and see him ply his craft.

Now that Aaron is 'the man' again, they are going to abuse him in the second half. He might not have an arm in 2007. Trade him in the off season.

If Heilman is overused in the second half, I can't even only blame Willie. Isn't there someone in the organization who is smart enough to come up with some type of informal schedule when he can pitch and when he cannot pitch? Can't Omar say to Willie: "don't use Heilman more than x amount per week?" Our concern should not be that he is overused, but that he is underused. He should be pitching twice a week tops, through the middle of September, and more then if he would need a little more to be "fresh" come playoff time.

Isn't that what we have The Genius, err, I mean The Jacket, err, I mean the 10 Second Doctor, err, I mean Rick Peterson for?

Other than facilitating trades of can't-miss-studs for can't-throw-stiffs, what do we have him for?
