I'm wondering if anyone ever reads this sentence.

All Your Braves Are Belong To Us

Don't look now, people, but we have a Brave Killer. Yes, after years of Bobby Cocks parading out a slew of Met Killers - Larry Jones, John Rocker, Brian Jordan, Eddie Perez, and even Jung Bong immediately leap to mind - it looks like the tables have finally been turned. With last night's 7-inning butt-kicking, I think it's fair to say that ownership by Ollie Perez has officially been established.

(1) Last night was must-win, but tonight's game is house money. Win or lose, we leave Atlanta in first place, at least two games up in the loss column. That being said, I'd love another win just so we can inch closer to .500 against these bums. Also, Smoltz is a big smelly homophobe. Let him get his 200th win against someone else.

(2) Man, I have never, ever seen Larry Jones look worse in an at-bat against the Mets than he did in the 8th inning last night. Joe Smith made him look like an 8-year-old girl swinging a wiffle bat in her parents' backyard. Mr. Smith, as far as I'm concerned, the 8th inning is yours to keep. Go with it.

(3) As for Wags, he raised my blood pressure slightly by going 3-0 on the first hitter, but he rebounded nicely. 11-for-11 so far. Nice.

(4) Despite the win, the Mets really haven't swung the bats at all since Saturday. We were pathetic on Sunday, brutal on Tuesday, and last we night we scored one of our 3 runs on a throwing error by Braves catcher Jarrod Saltandpeppershaker, and another on a sac fly. I'd really like to see an explosion today, although I'm sure Mr. Smoltz will have something to say about that. Oh well, there's always Dolphins Stadium, our own personal batting cage.

Finally, Bob Raissman has a great rip-job today on Fatso and Nut Case about the Giambi thing. Best line:

"God bless [the Daily News] for their exclusive," Francesa said.

Wow, just what we needed. A blessing from the Sports Pope.

That line is just crying out for a photshop job of Fatso decked out in papal gear. Who's up for the task?

I was unaware of the Smoltz anti-gay comment. That's very disappointing. Politically speaking, ballplayers never fail to disappoint.

Great title for the post (I am a latecomer to AYBABTU, but I love it nonetheless), and another great job by OllieP. He is such a pleasure to watch, and he looked increcibly strong in the 7th inning, firing pitches 105-120 with all his mojo (I hope he's not tired in August as the result of overwork in May). Could the Amazin's have back-to-back NL Pitchers and NL Players (D-Wright) of the Month?

I wouldn't go as far as to say tonight is "house money". We have to win at least one damn series against these guys. I can't remember the team doing anything against Smoltz recently. I think we eked out a 2-1 win two years ago with Pedro on the mound. Glavine has to be strong against his golfing buddy.

Congratulations to Jordin Sparks on winning American Idol. This victory by the daughter of the ex-NY Giant is probably one of the bigger ones for the G-Men in recent memory. However, Dallas (and Gator) fans can still hold their heads high over Emmitt's 2006 Dancing With the Stars Championship.

Actually, Bookie, we beat up Smoltzie pretty good last month at Shea. (9 hits and 6 ER in 5+ innings). We only lost the game because of freaking Aaron Heilman.

Oh yeah. I was actually at that game, too, so you'd think I would have remembered. Maybe I willfully blocked it out due to the disasterous ending.

Toasty, I really have to disgree that tonight's game is playing with house money. It sets a very bad precedent to have lost all 3 series with the Braves.

To repeat - If we leave Atlanta two games up in the loss column I will be fine with it. Losing 2 of 3 in a road series to a top team does not alarm me. However, when we get them at Shea again (which is not until August), that's a must-win series. Unless, of course, we're 15 games up at that point, in which case, who gives a crap.

Tonight's game is by no means a "must win" for the Mets, but it is still significant. I wouldn't use the term "house money" unless either the series (or, later in the season, the division) has already been won.

I am less concerned about the lead in the standings on May 24 as I am about having a losing record against a team in the division who we may be battling for the division late in the season and who we may see in the postseason. Every game counts, and whatever the standings say in August will in part be the result of head-to-head games against the Braves.

Ehhh....I'm not concerned about these Braves being inside the Mets' heads. Back in the Bobby V days, that was a big issue, but I don't see these Mets being intimidated by this Braves team, which isn't all that great anyway. (They're good, not great). All I care about is being in first place.

Still, last night's loss pisses off Rickey a lot. Freaking Smoltz.

There's nothing wrong with being a "big smelly homophobe". Alright, being big and smelly is not cool. "Phobe" implies fear. I don't think Smoltz is afraid of homos. He pisses me off because he kills the Mets, but I respect the shit out of him. The fact that he's "anti-gay" only makes me love him even more. In a ....platonic sort of way, of course.
