The Many Faces of Armando Benitez

A few weeks ago, I had a post entitled "This Man Is No Longer A New York Met. Rejoice." That one was after our old friend melted down in San Fran after being put in a tie game in the 9th inning against his old club. In light of that performance back on May 9, it made perfect sense for Giants manager Bruce Bochy to bring him into a save situation on the road against that same club, with 47,000 fans screaming for his blood.

The result? Walk, balk, balk, blast, ball game.

I must say, these Benitez performances are infinitely more enjoyable when he's wearing a different uniform.

In any event, what a classic ball game that was. I was lucky enough to be in attendance for all 12 innings (section 102 of the field level), which means I finally broke "The Curse of the Tostito" in grand fashion. (As you know, I had been 0 for 4 on the year. Ugh). What a way to get off the shnide. You had great starting pitching, outstanding defense, a couple of long balls, some timely hitting, and some intriguing high-pressure confrontations on both sides. Of course you had to know that a good, clean game like that would get decided by a total psychotic meltdown on the mound. Regardless, just a great night at Shea and one that I will not soon forget.

(1) Here's my pathetic cell phone pic of the scrum welcoming Delgado at home plate. Apparently when you use the "zoom" feature, it shrinks the entire picture. Damn you, Motorola.

(2) This Lincecum fellow looks to be the real deal. He was lighting up the radar gun in the first few innings, and then wheeled out this ankle-breaking 77-mph curve that made more than one Met look foolish. I was impressed. Kid can't hit for shit, though.

(3) In the first inning, Ollie was serving up more meatballs than Chef Boyardee at San Gennaro. Fortunately, only 2 left the yard, while three others somehow died at the warning track. After that, however, he was positively off the hook. Another stellar outing that shouldn't get lost in the shuffle when we look back on last night.

(4) Oh, and while we're at it, hats off to Heilman again. He's really turning into Willie's go-to guy with men on base in the late innings. It's when he starts innings that I get nervous, but when he comes in with ducks on the pond, he's been damn near automatic (see, e.g., Jeter, Derek). As you all know, I'm not a Heilman guy, but you gotta hand it to him lately.

(5) After all these years, Omar Vizquel is still a fucking wizard at shortstop. Seriously, they should just let him play shortstop wearing one of those wizard hats.

All in all, there was a terrific buzz at Shea last night that just seemed to grow and grow as the game progressed. And as soon as Benitez threw ball one to Reyes, the whole place started going nuts, since basically everyone knew what was about to happen.

God bless you, Armando.

Last night's game was tremendous. Is it too early to ask whether Oliver Perez will be one of the many New York Mets representatives at this year's All Star Game?

Toasty decided to call me last night to let me know that he was at the game. Knowing that he was 0-4, I let out a nice long "FUUUUUUU$#@%$$K!!!!!

BUT, I knew that if the curse of the Toastito was to be broken, it had to be done in dramatic fashion. My only regret is that I turned down a ticket from our good buddy "Shoot the glass" Rao and was confined to the couch for all 12 innings.

On another note.... A few months ago I looked in to renting Mr. Met to come to my wedding... the wife (a Red Sox fan) quickly put the kibosh on that idea. Well, it looks like she was right because judging by this Deadspin post, Mr. Met is a rowdy party animal that will take your drink and steal your girl.

I had also looked into having Mr. Met make an appearance at my wedding. My now wife didn't object, much to my amazement. It was $500 for the hour. Unfortunately, he wouldn't come past 10:00 at night so it didn't work for me. I envisioned him in his Mr. Met outfit with a tuxedo jacket with the sleeves ripped off.

It's not to early to ask...not much time left! Ollie is in and Wagner is in. Maine and Glavine are out. Wright, Reyes, and Beltran will be there and no one else. Not a bad roster though!

I nearly came to blows with my friend and fellow Met fan when Delgado stepped on first and came home as Vizquel scored the go ahead run in the 12th. He said it was the right move and I said he successfully demonstrated he had no knowledge of baseball. Luckily they won and it became a moot point.

If I see Franco come up with a man in scoring position again I might go nuts. And having him pinch hit for a hitter? Not allowed. What is Willie thinking? Can someone help me? I know Gomez looked overmatched, but who didn't?

Mr. Met - I agree re: Franco, although in fairness it must be noted that it took a miraculous play by Vizquel to keep Franco's sharp grounder up the middle from being a walk-off hit.

Krup - Never doing The Switch again after a night game. Just not gonna happen.

Mr. Met, I think that you left out Lo Duca from the list of Mets all starts. He has been great this year and was voted in as a starter last year.

Gomez looked exceptionally over-matched last night. Darling rightly said that he needed another year of seasoning.

Well, yeah, is that even disputed? He's only 21, and the only reason he is still up here is because of injuries to Alou, Green and Milledge.

Can I dare ask whether D-Wright really deserves it this year (at least, based on stats thus far)? As of today, he's being outhit and outslugged by Miggy Cabrera, A-Ram and even (yikes!) Larry Jones, all of whom are "legit" players. David does have those 10 stolen bases, which leads the league, but otherwise, that horrid April has kept him towards the back of the pack of the "good" NL 3rd basemen. Lo Duca is likewise being outperformed by Benji Molina, who is a perrenial stud.

I am going to the ballpark tonight, and I intend to do the Switch. I will let you know how it goes. If you don't hear from me by 11:00 a.m., then I am still standing on the platform at 74th Street in Queens. Wish me luck.

100% aware of the spectacular play by Vizquel and whomever the second basemen was, but it goes down as an out and yet another failed attempt by the man with the slowest bat speed in the entire league. I just think in that spot you stick with Gomez. Afterall, didn't we just have WWIII about Willie 'testing' his guys when many of us thought Burgos should have been pulled against Howard weeks ago? Willie is consistently inconsistent. Lots of his moves end up working or the Mets end up winning but that is because they are far and away the most skillful.

All that being said, Franco should only be at the plate if he is the laaaaaast option. Giving him at-bats should be criminal and if he does go in, it should NEVER be in leiu of a postion player. Only a pitcher. Even in that case it's not a lock as I'd rather see Glavine hit at this point. Nice guy. I'm happy that anything he does from now on makes him the oldest to do whatever, but he is Willie's go to guy off the bench and that is just mind blowing.

RE: Wright...he certainly does not deserve it, but I think he has built up enough goodwill and happens to play in NYC. Like Cano most likely getting in with the entire Yankee starting lineup, Wright will get voted in. However, did anyone think about te silver lining in 400 Yankees getting in the All-Star game this year? HOMEFIELD FOR THE METS IN OCTOBER!!!

RE: LoDuca...I think Martin should start with McCann as the reserve. LoDuca certainly belongs in the conversation though and has exhibited a much better arm. If he doesn't get voted in as the starter, he might not go. If he does get voted in as the starter, I fear the McCann may push out Martin who has been the best so far because McCann has people fooled into thinking he's NL's version of Joe Maur from his hot start.

Willie is on the FAN right now, stating that he is not moving away from Franco as his #1 pinch hitter.

Toasty, Bookie and I are sitting in the Mezzanine Box, Section 9, Row/Box 547A.
