Now Batting For The Mets...Numba 18... "Doodles"...Numba 18...
Meet Doodles. Let me tell you a little bit about him.1. He's rich. He can plunk down $350 for an authentic Mets road jersey with the name "Doodles" on the back without a second thought. You have to admire that kind of wealth.
2. He's doesn't care what you think. Why else would he walk around with the word "Doodles" on the back of his jersey?
3. He's busy. He leaves Shea Stadium in the 7th inning during Met games. So, clearly, he's got some very important things to do.
4. He's strong. He can take being razzed by four drunken idiots (ok, us) from up above for 3 straight innings without even turning around once.
This, my friends, is Doodles. Give thy praise unto him.
(1) Total mulligan game for the Mets, what with the big win on Tuesday, the absurdly unfair pitching matchup last night, and the Phils and Braves losing again. I'm just pleased they made it a ball game at all in the 9th.
(2) Did anyone else think it was insane for Bud Black to bring in Hoffman in the 9th? Not only was it risky from the standpoint of last night's game (given what happened the night before), now there's a fair chance he'll be unavailable to pitch tonight. Well played, sir.
(3) Mota stinks. Sonny D's expression last night sums it up.(4) I had the "over" in the first Rangers/O's game last night. I hope I won.
Finally, I must acknowledge another great night for Lastings Milledge against a top-tier pitcher. And just think, he added another strikeout a few moments after this picture was taken.
Last night's Spanish phrase should have been "Sombrero de oro," as in "Lastings Millege tiene un sombrero de oro."Viva 'Stings!
p.s. - You know those people who like to stick their head in the background of pictures of people they don't even know? We snapped a great one last night. If this guy is out there reading this blog, nice work, sir. You are a credit to guys in shit-brown Mets caps everywhere.

Poor "Doodles". Is it possible we drove him to leave by the 7th? I'd certainly like to think so. It was definitely the best jersey name we'd seen since the duo of "Sugar" and "Theft".
In the doghouse with Doodles, you'll find Guillermo Mota. You can't blame the Mets for bringing him back after his performance last season. But whether he's juiceless or just plain stinks again, he shouldn't be pitching in a game right now where the run differential is less than 4 runs. Send him back down, bring back "Mighty" Joe Smith.
We are in Trevor Hoffman's head. Well, except for Delgado.

Why did he bring in Hoffman? Stats, baby. Hoffman comes into the game with a 4 run lead, but is save-eligible thanks to the stupid "tying run in the on-deck circle" rule. He lets 2 inherited runners score before nailing it down. And he gets thus gets another save for the record books, plus .2 "scoreless" innings to lower his ERA a smidge.
Ladies, and gentleman, the greatest closer of all time. . .

Nice seeing you guys last night - just a reminder that Zoe is hosting a bloggerati event at the Blind Pig over by Union sq (14th between 2nd and 3rd I believe - just google it to make sure, I always walk there, so I don't pay attention to signs LOL). the night is Tues Aug 28 for the mets in Philly. Probably congregate around 6:30. Later!! or shall I say "Doodles!"
PS I won't comment on the game b/c...well basically, bookie was a "gracious" guest - gracious enough that after 4 beers, I was numb enough to not even care that delgado wasted a key at-bat. Or that mota sucks.

At least shit-brown hat guy's friends fed us peanuts through the night, which was helpful since the pretzel guy never showed up.
Speaking of met watching events, does anyone plan on going to the Ziegfield to watch the game? If only I didn't have a football draft, or the impending birth of my child, I'd be there.
And that BookieD is always very gracious...

SonnyD, I really have to disagree with you when you say with regards to Mota that "you can't blam the Mets for bringing him back." The only reason he performed well was because of the steroids. WIthout cheating, he is the same awful pitcher that he was before the Mets acquired him. There was no reason whatsoever to think that he would still be good once off the roids. Moreover, it sets a terrible precedent. The team rewarded him for cheating with a nice new contract. Not only that, they backloaded the deal so that he lost much less in salary when he sat out 50 games then he otherwise would have.

They should've put Doodles in to pitch.

Coop/SonnyD--Thanks for the kind words. Notwithstanding the results on the field, I enjoyed last night's game from the Coop Seats (which, I should say, are pretty damn good--Mezz Box, 3B/LF, great view of all on-field happenings, though sadly, no view of Doodles, and a convivial group of nearby fans, one of whom was kind enough to compliment my orange 2004 BP Reyes Jersey). Some frosty suds were definitely a requirement for Brian Lawrence vs. Jake Peavy
I think the Hoffman appearance was both a typical tail-wagging-the-dog reaction to a "save situation" and perhaps an indication that for the Pads, this was a no-fooling-around game they "had" to win. Those D-Backs are relentless out West (similar to the Mariners who defy the stat-heads and continue to pile on wins without a significant run differential), and they can't go pissing away wins anymore.
As I said to Coop last night, I wish I was as loyal to anything as Willie and Omar are to Guillermo Mota. Forget about the Omerta or the Cryps and Bloods, I'd like to know what kind of oath or initiation ritual Guillermo went through to engender such undying devotion from the New York Mets Family. Geez!
I laughed out loud at the brown-hat guy. Nice job.
Regarding the Zigfield, I have the same dilema as SonnyD (no, not a baby on the way, a competing Fantasy Football Draft). Having seen X-Men 2, Star Wars Episodes II and III and lavish Hollywood Musicals, Dreamgirls and Chicago at the venerable theatre, the only experience missing is a NY Mets baseball game. Enjoy the popcorn, you lucky people. If I can bag Reggie Bush with the 10th overall pick, it will be totally worth it.

I wanted to get some opinions on whether the Mets should try and sign Curt Schilling this offseason to a one year contract. He is a free agent, unlikely at this point to return to Boston and might fill in very nicely in Glavine's spot in the rotation next year when Glavine is retired.

Toasty,
Not for nothing but who were you trying to take a picture of? Shit brown hat guy was perfectly framed! You were almost ASKING for him to pose!
4:50 PM
Mike, it was one of those deals where I held the camera with my left hand and took a picture of us, so I should be forgiven if it's not perfectly framed.
5:11 PM
forget that dude, who's the blonde girl behind him, let's get her backstory...also, you should check
