"Willie, You're Doin' a Heckuva Job!"
And so it was, on the twenty-sixth day of May, 2008, New York Mets ownership and general management sat down with Willie Randolph for two hours to discuss his team's sub-.500 record for the past year despite a $140 payroll, a 1-6 trip against division rival Atlanta and injury-riddled, last place Colorado, his baseless accusations of racism against the media and fans, and game after game of shoddy, listless, lifeless, and mistake-ridden play.Eventually, GM Omar Minaya emerged from this meeting to address the assembled media, and expressed the only conclusion one could possibly reach from these facts:
“Willie Randolph is our manager. There is no limbo. He’s the manager…and I hope he is our manager for many years to come.”
Wha-what-WHAT?!?
Of course, following this pronouncement, Willie's boys went out there and rallied behind him the only way they know how:
A shoddy, listless, lifeless, and mistake-ridden 7-3 loss.
Strike up the band!

Some thoughts on some atrocious baseball this weekend:
(1) Apparently Carlos Delgado is getting a little prickly with the media:
Asked to answer the part of the question regarding Randolph, Delgado told Heyman, “If you wanna be an ass, I can be an ass too.”
No, Carlos, you just PLAY like ass. Jesus, when can we cut this useless pantload? Every day it's a competition to see which is worse, his bat or his glove. Just get this cancer out of here and move on. If the Blue Jays can afford to eat Frank Thomas's contract, why can't we afford to eat Delgad-awful's? I don't understand it.
(2) Here's the script for about 93% of the Met losses in 2008: (a) Take modest 1-run lead for first 2-3 innings; (b) Blow lead, often with defensive blunder; (c) Let other team pad lead; (d) Shut everything down - no rallies, no fight, no nothing. Shut. Everything. Down. I've never seen a sadder brand of baseball in my life. When the other team grabs a one-run or two-run lead in the 5th inning, it's not just "over" in the way people say "it's over" in a half-kidding kind of way. It's actually, literally, "over." Done. Finished. Change the channel. Perhaps there's a way to let us forfeit these games once we give up a lead, so our players will be nice and rested for 2009?
(3) Some have suggested that Omar belongs on the hot seat instead of Willie. I, personally, don't see it. Yes, he's made some mistakes (Bannister-for-Burgos and the absurd Castillo contract stand out), but c'mon, man: he's put together a team with David Wright, Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran, Johan Santana, Billy Wagner and John Maine, and orchestrated what looks like an absolute raping of the Nationals with the Church/Schneider for Milledge deal. And this somehow is a team that now doesn't even COMPETE, let alone win? The Mets have terrible fundamentals, they don't hustle, they give away at-bats, and they generally play stupid, lazy and disinterested baseball. These sorts of things, in my opinion, fall in the manager's lap. It's time for a new voice.
Finally, Flitgirl said something interesting during the game yesterday. Taking note of my less-than-stellar mood, she remarked "see, this is why I'm not a sports fan."
And you know what? I thought about it for a second, and she had a point. Why do I put myself through this torture, year after year after year?
And then I realized something.
This is why.

Can't talk...cuteness overload....cuteness overload...
Thanks, Mike! Can we drag him to every game? Clearly he inspired them on to victory.

That dude in the picture used to run a baseball team!
Toasty, a quick add to #2:
Loading the bases with no outs and only managing to plate one run before ending the inning.
I'd like to know what Elias has on a team stat like that because last night isn't the first time it's happened this season.

Every now and then we just need a break from our teams. Like the break I've taken from the knicks for several years.
I now record the mets and watch some of the game if they win. Heck - I recorded some of the Gmen games last year out of disgust... and look what happened to them. I can watch that Eli to Plax clip all day, everyday.

Toasty -
Omar deserves part of the blame if the guys he traded for or signed are playing like crap.
He also deserves blame for putting together an aged bench and cutting Gotay (who is not a savior, but is a better option at 2nd than Easley) in favor of Brady Clark.
Omar did not have an effective back-up in place for Delgado, or one for Alou (who everyone knew was going to spend some time on the DL). Angel Pagan is a nice 5th outfielder, Endy is a good defensive replacement.
That being said, I don't think Omar needs to go.
I also don't think firing Willie is going to have an impact, though I would not be upset if he was canned.
John Stearns for manager!

The only thing that makes me happy these days is watching the Yankees break down due to old age and HGH withdrawal.
Jeter - As I told Lurker last season, Jeter is in progressive decline every year. I predict that he will go the way of Roberto Alomar, wind up spitting on umpires (side note - could be a felony, given the fact that Captain H is probably HIV positive) and slinking out of baseball as a disgraced has-been at the end of next season. Hall of Fame? I don't think so.
Robison Cano - the next coming of Rod Carew? I don't think Carew ever hit .208 this late in the season.
Giambi? Have some more donuts, fat boy.
Mussina - it's just sad to watch him pitch.
Damon - Have some more donuts, fat boy.
Suzyn Waldman - still Lurker's wet dream

A Met win last night and a new Luis Sojo post for the first time in weeks. This is like Christmas.

Ed, I'm not saying Omar has done a perfect job. But on the whole, his good moves have outweighed his bad ones, in my opinion. Willie? whatever pluses he may have had as a manager have long since been surpassed by his minuses.

Re: Delgado... For reasons that are beyond Rickey, they're trying to follow the Mike Piazza model of putting him out to pasture. Handling an aging former slugger with dignity and respect, blah blah blah. Just kick the bum's ass to the curb already Rickey says.

140 million for a team with 4 good position players, 2 good relievers, and 2 good starting pitchers, while everybody else absolutely sucks, and you don't fault the GM?
Omar, all in all, has been a poor, though not horrendous, evluator of talent. He has Maine, Sanchez, and Perez (sort of) going for him; but he has given away power arms (Lindstrom), quality starters (Bannister) quality bats (Keppinger), and highly useful prospects (Jesus Flores-literally given away--and Sean Henry, for Conine, which means he was also given away). Each and every one of these bad moves was totally needless, and when you factor in that Maine and Perez were throw ins in their respective deals, look at what Omar Minaya thought he was getting: Jorge Julio and Roberto Hernandez for Benson and Xavier Nady. Omar might just be the luckiest GM on the planet. His drafting has been terrible, and his minor league system is in shambles, and was pretty bad even before the trade for Santana. AHern, for crying out loud, was once slated as the second baseman of the future!
What does Omar have to do with Reyes and Wright? He inherited these talents. His job was to build a team around them. He went about it by trading for and signing players past their primes (LoDuca, Duque, Pedro, Delgado, Valentin, Alou, Castillo, Roberto Hernandez, Conine) hoping for short term success, and disregarding the long term implications. He caught lightning in a bottle in '06, when Valentin, LoDuca, and Chavez had career years, but he kept going to the same well as these players aged and/or regressed, saddling the Mets with multiple bad contracts in the process.
What saves Omar? John Maine. Also, that David Wright and Jose Reyes signed way below market value, for which Omar should receive some credit. Church is playing over his head, and Milledge under his potential, but Omar should get some credit nonetheless for spotting Church--although this could have been luck too--Bowden might have been the only GM who wanted Milledge, and Minaya coud have just taken whatever he offered. ("Raped the Nationals for Church and Schneider"? Though it appears that Milledge fans overreacted to the trade, we're still a long way from seeing its full reprecussions. As for Schneider (who is something like 1 for his last 30)his main contribution is taking time away from more capable catchers. Castro, when healthy, should be starting half the games.)
The circumstances were right for him to get Santana--as they didn't have to worry, as the Yanks and Sox did, about dealing top-tier prospects. But Omar still deserves credit for playing his cards right and not giving in and dealing Pelfrey or Martinez.
And his bad deals have not done him in, since most of them are relatively minor. Alou gets $8M (I believe) Castillo gets $6M/yr, Schnieder $3M, Schowenweiss $2ishM, Chavez $2ishM, etc. It's the accumulation of tons of these bad contracts that leads to the Mets overpaying for their performance level by about $75M. A GM who basically wastes $75M should be fired, particularly when there seems to be no plan in mind for the future except more Castillos and more free agents who will be signed past their primes and become albatrosses. That's the bottom line.

Sojo, I don't have the patience to respond to your inanity point by point. Recall, however, that mid-last year, you argued that Reyes was far superior to Jeter in every respect, and I responded that this would probably be true in 2010, but certainly not today. One year later, and it's still a no-brainer to pencil in a "declining" Jeter over a faded Reyes. Long term, who knows at this point?
Anyhoo, I need some advice from Toasty's loyal readers. I'm heading to Shea tomorrow night to support our former Nosepicker-in-Chief. I'm taking the 7 train from midtown and need to be picked up after the game by car for reasons to complicated to explain. Can anyone suggest a convenient meeting place walkable Shea? Preferably one where a minivan containing a woman and two small kids wouldn't be a blatant target?
Thanks, all.

Reyes is comparable to Jeter in batting average and OBP right now and is a far superior shortstop defensively, in spite of his lapses of concentration. His power numbers are superior to Derek Jeter and his speed increases his presence as an extra base threat.
I'd take Reyes over Jeter right now; I'd say that he will be undeniably better than Jeter in '09, and will waste him in '10.
